What You’ll Do
Under the responsibility of the VA Interior Designer, the Jr. Interior Designer shall develop deadlines, overall objectives, resources available and tasks necessary to complete the work. The Junior Interior Designer shall be responsible for independent planning and carrying out the assigned tasks to meet the objectives of the Planning Section, including overseeing and assisting with major project activations, moves, space planning, budgeting, preparing packages for furniture, finishes and equipment purchases, management of delivery and installation.
  • Work with the contracted Interior Designer, contracted Interior Design Assistant and VA Interior Designer to create and execute appropriate design services for varied spaces including offices, conference rooms, patient care exam rooms, patient treatment rooms, waiting rooms, entry lobbies, café, break rooms, support rooms including Housekeeping Aid Closets, storage and stockrooms.
  • Designs building interior design environments to promote employee productivity, health and welfare, and/or health and welfare of the public. Responsibilities and tasks shall be assigned and directed by the VA Interior Designer.
  • Prepare detailed AutoCAD designs, plans, sketches, perspectives, color schemes and any visual aids for proposed design presentations. This involves analyzing architectural drawings and developing AutoCAD Furniture, Fixture & Equipment (FF&E) plan layers, which have been provided for systems and components of building codes, major equipment, materials, placeholder furnishings and traffic patterns.
  • Interpret and review provided architectural plans for concurrence to the VA’s Technical Information Library (TIL), standards and specifications as used for the basis of current construction and procurement package development.
  • Produce procurement packages following VA contracting procurement standards including Statement of Work (SOW), technical specifications, attachments, documentation, drawings, independent government cost estimates, bid sheets and budgets to procure products, services and installation plans and schedules necessary to activate the major construction projects. This includes financial management related to the procurement of FF&E items, communicating with the awarded vendor & activations team regarding the status of each package, coordinating delivery & installation schedules. The Contractor shall be responsible for creating and maintaining collateral; SOW, specification writing, Independent Government Estimates (IGCE), schedules, financial control log, scaled drawings and market research related to procurement package creation, maintenance & tracking using Microsoft Office Suite & AutoCAD software, etc.
  • Maintain in good order the Interior Design Resource Library that includes drawings, plans, specification procurement documents, project correspondence, and project binders relating to various design and construction projects.
  • Manage activation, including furnishings, accessories, art, signage, equipment, office supplies and environmental management supplies. Installation oversight tasks shall also be assigned during the installation phase.
  • Perform other administrative duties as assigned, such as administering day-in-the-life scenarios, move plans, creating schedules and attending project meetings.
  • Review wayfinding signage plans, furniture and artwork installation plans and direct installation crews in their work without being supervised. Responsible for identifying and creating a punch list for installed items and working with furniture dealers, installers and other involved parties to coordinate completion of punch list items.
  • Follow basic working knowledge of Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Standard (ABAAS), VA Barrier Free Design Guide, VA Technical Information Library (TIL), International Code Council (ICC), Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA).

What You’ll Have
Required Qualifications:
  • Associate’s degree.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.
  •  New graduates are acceptable if supported by internships or practical experience in medical or institutions environments.
  • Must be familiar with Patient Centered Care culture in healthcare.
  • Ability to review and interpret blueprints and specifications.
  • Skilled in free form drawing and drawing to scale when on a job site measuring for a project.
  • Preferred certifications such as National Council for Interior Design Qualification, Project Management Certification, Evidenced Based Design Accreditation and Certification and/or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
  • Expertise with recommendations for the selection, specification, procurement, and placement of furnishings.
  • AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint & Outlook) are required. Microsoft Project & Revit are beneficial but not required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally with a variety of contractors, management officials, vendors, Contracting Officers and Long Beach staff.
  • Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
  • Qualified candidates shall have received an annual seasonal influenza vaccination, or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons, prior to start of work.
